Project Description
This section of the TCH is a congested area with known major safety issues related to passing. In particular, the westbound/southbound traffic demonstrates high-risk passing behavior at the Illecillewaet curve, which has resulted in multiple incidents.
The lane widening on the TCH west-bound side on the approach and departure to the Illecillewaet curve will significantly improve passing opportunity throughout the entire area and therefore improve road user safety, network performance and visitor experience. It achieves this through the inclusion of passing opportunities in the westbound direction as traffic approach the Illecillewaet curve, thus extending the opportunity into areas with more favorable geometry.
This project involved grading, drainage, utility relocation, paving and the construction of two gun positions.
